Union Home Minister unveiled two mascots, Pragati’ and ‘Vikas’, for the upcoming Population Census 2027 to increase public awareness and participation in the census exercise

1. Census 2027:
The Census 2027 is India’s 16th decennial census and the first to be conducted entirely digitally. Originally planned for 2021, the exercise was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and is now scheduled to conclude by March 1, 2027.
- It will be conducted by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India under Ministry of Home affairs.
- It will be the 16th Census since 1872 and the 8th Census after Independence.
The census is conducted in two phases:
- House Listing and Housing Census (HLO): Collects information about housing conditions, assets, and amenities.
- Population Enumeration (PE): Collects demographic, social, economic and cultural data of individuals
