📌 Topic 03 of 6 · Chapter 06 · Post-Mauryan & Gupta Empire
Gupta Golden Age — Science & Mathematics
Aryabhata (zero, pi, heliocentric theory), Varahamihira, Brahmagupta, Charaka, Sushruta — scientific achievements.
🌟 Why “Golden Age”?
The Gupta period (4th–6th century CE) is called the Golden Age of India because of unprecedented achievements in science, mathematics, astronomy, literature, art, and philosophy. India led the world in intellectual achievement during this period.
🔢 Mathematics & Astronomy
| Scholar | Period | Key Contributions |
|---|---|---|
| Aryabhata | 476–550 CE | • Calculated value of pi (π) = 3.1416 • Proposed heliocentric theory (Earth rotates on its axis) • Calculated Earth’s circumference • Explained solar and lunar eclipses scientifically • Wrote Aryabhatiya (499 CE) • Concept of zero (though Brahmagupta formalised it) |
| Brahmagupta | 598–668 CE | • Formalised rules for zero and negative numbers • Wrote Brahmasphutasiddhanta • Solved quadratic equations • Calculated Earth’s circumference more accurately |
| Varahamihira | 505–587 CE | • Wrote Brihat Samhita (encyclopaedia of astronomy, astrology, natural science) • Wrote Panchasiddhantika (five astronomical systems) • One of Chandragupta II’s Navratnas |
⭐ Aryabhata’s Revolutionary Ideas: Aryabhata proposed that the Earth rotates on its axis (heliocentric theory) — 1,000 years before Copernicus! He also correctly explained that lunar eclipses are caused by Earth’s shadow falling on the Moon. His work Aryabhatiya was translated into Arabic and Latin, influencing European science.
🏥 Medicine
| Scholar | Work | Contribution |
|---|---|---|
| Charaka | Charaka Samhita | Father of Ayurveda; internal medicine; 8 branches of medicine |
| Sushruta | Sushruta Samhita | Father of Surgery; 300+ surgical procedures; 120+ surgical instruments; plastic surgery (rhinoplasty) |
| Vagbhata | Ashtanga Hridayam | Synthesised Charaka and Sushruta; comprehensive medical text |
