โญ Vinoba Bhave โ€” First Indian Magsaysay Recipient (1958): Vinoba Bhave (1895โ€“1982) was the first Indian to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1958. He was a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi and is best known for the Bhoodan (land gift) movement, in which he walked across India asking landowners to voluntarily donate land to the landless poor. He also received the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1983. He was the first person to receive the Bharat Ratna posthumously.
๐Ÿ“Œ Ela Bhatt and SEWA: Ela Bhatt founded the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) in Ahmedabad, Gujarat in 1972. SEWA is a trade union of poor, self-employed women workers โ€” including street vendors, home-based workers, and manual labourers. It has over 2 million members and is one of the largest organisations of informal workers in the world. Ela Bhatt received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1977 and the Padma Bhushan in 1986.
