National Solar Mission & India’s 500 GW Target
National Solar Mission, 500 GW target, ISA, Paris Agreement — complete notes for UPSC & PSC exams.
☀️ Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM)
- Launched in January 2010 as part of India’s National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC)
- Initially targeted 20 GW solar by 2022 (later revised to 100 GW)
- India achieved 100 GW solar capacity in 2023
- One of 8 missions under NAPCC
- India’s solar capacity grew from 10 MW (2010) to ~80 GW (2024) — remarkable achievement
☀️ India’s Renewable Energy Targets (Panchamrit)
| Target | Details |
|---|---|
| 500 GW non-fossil energy by 2030 | 300 GW solar + 140 GW wind + 60 GW other renewables |
| 50% electricity from renewables by 2030 | Half of India’s electricity from non-fossil sources |
| Reduce emissions intensity by 45% by 2030 | Compared to 2005 levels |
| Net zero by 2070 | India’s long-term climate commitment |
☀️ International Solar Alliance (ISA)
- Proposed by PM Modi and French President Hollande at COP21, Paris (2015)
- Headquarters: NISE campus, Gurugram, Haryana
- 120+ member countries
- Aims to mobilise $1 trillion for solar energy by 2030
- Focuses on sunshine-rich countries between Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn
- “One Sun One World One Grid” (OSOWOG) — PM Modi’s initiative at COP26 — interconnect global electricity grids
