β Rani ki Vav (Queen’s Stepwell): Located in Patan, Gujarat. Built in the 11th century CE by Queen Udayamati in memory of her husband King Bhimdev I of the Solanki dynasty. It is designed as an inverted temple β the deeper you go, the more sacred the space. Has 7 storeys and over 500 principal sculptures and 1,000 minor ones. The stepwell was submerged under silt for centuries and was excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India. UNESCO inscribed it in 2014. The image of Rani ki Vav appears on the βΉ100 note.
π Ahmedabad β First Indian City with UNESCO Status (2017): Ahmedabad (Gujarat) became the first Indian city to receive UNESCO World Heritage City status in 2017. Founded by Sultan Ahmad Shah I in 1411 CE. Known for its Indo-Islamic architecture, traditional pols (walled neighbourhoods), and the Sabarmati Ashram (Gandhi’s base). Key monuments: Jama Masjid, Sidi Saiyyed Mosque (famous jali windows), Teen Darwaza, Bhadra Fort. The city also has strong associations with Mahatma Gandhi.
