🏺 Kumbh Mela
- The Kumbh Mela is the world’s largest religious gathering — held at four locations in India on a rotational basis
- Based on the Hindu legend of the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) — drops of the nectar of immortality (amrit) fell at four places
- Four locations and their rivers:
- Prayagraj (Allahabad) — Triveni Sangam (Ganga + Yamuna + Saraswati); most sacred; Maha Kumbh every 12 years
- Haridwar — Ganga; Kumbh every 12 years
- Nashik — Godavari; Kumbh every 12 years
- Ujjain — Shipra; Kumbh every 12 years
- Types: Maha Kumbh (every 12 years at Prayagraj), Purna Kumbh (every 12 years at each location), Ardha Kumbh (every 6 years), Kumbh (every 3 years)
- Inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017
- The 2013 Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj attracted approximately 120 million pilgrims — the largest human gathering in history
- Key ritual: Shahi Snan (royal bath) — bathing in the sacred river on auspicious dates
⭐ Kumbh Mela 2025 (Maha Kumbh): The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 was held at Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26, 2025. It attracted over 400 million visitors — making it the largest human gathering ever recorded. The Triveni Sangam (confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati) is the main bathing ghat. The Shahi Snan (royal bath) dates are determined by planetary positions. Akharas (monastic orders) lead the processions.
