⭐ Kathputli (Rajasthan): The most famous Indian puppetry tradition. “Kathputli” = “kath” (wood) + “putli” (doll). Made by the Bhat community of Rajasthan. The puppets have no legs — they wear long flowing skirts. Controlled by a single string looped over the puppeteer’s finger. Stories depict Rajput heroes, folk tales, and social themes. Kathputli Colony in Delhi was a famous settlement of Kathputli artists. UNESCO has recognised Kathputli as an important intangible cultural heritage.
📌 Tholu Bommalata (AP/Telangana): Shadow puppet theatre of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. “Tholu” = leather, “Bommalata” = puppet dance. Made from translucent goat or deer leather, painted with natural dyes. The puppets are large (up to 5 feet) and colourful. Performed at night with a lamp behind a white screen. Themes: Ramayana, Mahabharata, Puranas. GI tag received. The Nimmala family of Nimmalakunta village are the most famous practitioners.
