Why in News?
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister announced plans to develop a satellite launching facility on Hope Island. The project is part of the proposed “Space City” initiative in Kakinada, aiming to boost India’s space infrastructure.
Hope Island:
- Located off the coast of Kakinada in the Bay of Bengal.
- Acts as a natural breakwater, protecting Kakinada port from: Cyclones, Storm surges and Tidal waves
- Known for mangrove ecosystems in the Godavari estuary.
- Important nesting site for Olive Ridley Sea Turtles Part of Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary
About Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary:
- Location: Near Kakinada, at the confluence of Godavari River & Bay of Bengal
- Importance: Second-largest mangrove forest in India (after Sundarbans)
- Key Species:
- Fishing Cat
- Smooth-coated Otter
- Olive Ridley Sea Turtle
