Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy laid the foundation stone for a ₹200 crore campus of the National Institute of Urban Management (NIUM) at Bharat Future City, near Hyderabad. The state gave 20 acres free of cost, and the deadline is 2 June 2028, Telangana Formation Day. NIUM was first selected in 2009 under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
Interconnected concept
The 74th Constitutional Amendment, 1992, gave constitutional status to Urban Local Bodies. It added Part IXA (Articles 243P to 243ZG) and the Twelfth Schedule, which lists 18 functions of municipalities. Many municipal bodies lack trained staff, so institutes like NIUM train officials and elected councillors. JNNURM was launched in 2005, and AMRUT and the Smart Cities Mission replaced it in 2015.
Why it can be asked
Urban governance and capacity building of local bodies come up in GS-1 and GS-2. For TGPSC, Bharat Future City and NIUM are useful state facts.
Key facts
- NIUM was established on 29 July 2013 and works as Telangana’s urban think tank and action-research institute.
- It has trained more than 6,000 elected representatives and officials.
- It has prepared GIS-based master plans for 54 urban local bodies.
- The new campus will have six action-research centres, covering governance and financing, infrastructure, socio-economic development, urban mobility, climate, and incubation.
