⭐ Kutiyattam — Oldest Surviving Sanskrit Theatre: Kutiyattam (also spelled Koodiyattam) is the oldest surviving form of Sanskrit theatre in the world, performed in Kerala. It is performed in special theatre halls (Kuttambalam) attached to temples. The performances can last for days or even weeks. It combines Sanskrit drama with Kerala’s traditional performing arts. Actors undergo rigorous training for years. UNESCO recognised it as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage in 2001 — one of the first such recognitions globally.
📌 Garba of Gujarat — UNESCO 2023: Garba was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2023. Garba is a circular dance performed during the nine nights of Navratri in Gujarat, in devotion to Goddess Amba (Durga). Dancers move in concentric circles around a central lamp or image of the goddess. The dance is accompanied by traditional music and singing. Garba has become popular worldwide, especially among the Indian diaspora. The inscription recognises its cultural significance and the need to safeguard it.
