⭐ Onam — Kerala’s Greatest Festival: Onam is the state festival of Kerala, celebrated for 10 days during the Malayalam month of Chingam (August–September). It celebrates the annual homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali (Maveli), who is believed to visit his people during Onam. Key features: Pookalam (elaborate flower carpet), Vallamkali (snake boat race — especially at Aranmula and Nehru Trophy at Punnamada Lake), Onasadya (feast of 26 dishes served on banana leaf), Thiruvathira dance, Pulikali (tiger dance). Onam was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
📌 Bihu — Three Types: Assam celebrates three Bihu festivals: (1) Rongali/Bohag Bihu (April) — most important; marks Assamese New Year and spring; agricultural new year; Bihu dance performed; (2) Kongali/Kati Bihu (October) — sombre; lamps lit in fields; prayers for good harvest; (3) Bhogali/Magh Bihu (January) — harvest festival; community feasting; Meji (bonfire); Bhela Ghar (temporary huts).
