Biosphere Reserves in India โ€” UNESCO MAB Programme

All 18 Biosphere Reserves, three zones, and 12 UNESCO World Network sites โ€” complete exam notes.

UNESCO Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme

The UNESCO Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme was launched in 1971 to promote sustainable development based on science and local community involvement. It designates Biosphere Reserves โ€” areas of terrestrial and coastal ecosystems that are internationally recognized for integrating biodiversity conservation with sustainable use.

  • Biosphere Reserves are not legally protected under Indian law โ€” they are UNESCO designations
  • They are managed under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC)
  • India has 18 Biosphere Reserves in total
  • 12 of these are part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR)
โšก Key Distinction: Biosphere Reserves โ‰  National Parks or Wildlife Sanctuaries. They are larger landscape-level designations that may contain NPs and WLS within them. E.g., Nilgiri BR contains Mudumalai WLS, Bandipur NP, Nagarhole NP, and Silent Valley NP.
Three Zones of a Biosphere Reserve

๐Ÿ”ด Core Zone

Strictly protected; no human activity allowed; biodiversity conservation is the primary goal; usually a National Park or Wildlife Sanctuary.

๐ŸŸก Buffer Zone

Surrounds the core zone; limited human activities permitted โ€” research, education, eco-tourism; acts as a protective ring around the core.

๐ŸŸข Transition / Cooperation Zone

Outermost zone; human settlements, agriculture, and sustainable resource use permitted; local communities actively involved in management.
