🏛️ Architectural Features of the Taj Mahal
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Main tomb | White marble mausoleum on a raised square platform (plinth); octagonal plan; four minarets at corners |
| Double dome | Outer bulbous dome (73 m tall) + inner dome; space between for insulation; topped with a brass finial |
| Four minarets | Four detached minarets at corners of the plinth; each 40 m tall; slightly tilted outward (so they fall away from the tomb in case of earthquake) |
| Pietra dura | Intricate inlay of semi-precious stones (lapis lazuli, carnelian, jade, turquoise, coral) in white marble; floral and geometric patterns |
| Charbagh garden | Four-part garden divided by water channels; central reflecting pool; cypress trees; represents Islamic paradise |
| Gateway (Darwaza-i-Rauza) | Red sandstone gateway with white marble inlay; Quranic inscriptions; leads to the garden |
| Mosque and Mihman Khana | Red sandstone mosque on the west; identical Mihman Khana (guest house) on the east; for symmetry |
| Calligraphy | Quranic verses in black marble inlay; designed by calligrapher Amanat Khan |
⭐ Optical Illusion in Taj Mahal: The Taj Mahal incorporates several optical corrections: (1) The four minarets are slightly tilted outward — so they appear vertical from a distance and would fall away from the main tomb in an earthquake. (2) The calligraphic inscriptions increase in size as they go higher — so they appear uniform in size when viewed from below. (3) The main dome appears to float above the structure due to the drum on which it sits. These demonstrate the sophisticated understanding of optics by Mughal architects.
🏰 Other Shah Jahan Monuments
| Monument | Location | Key Features |

| Jama Masjid | Delhi | Largest mosque in India; red sandstone + white marble; 3 domes; 2 minarets (40 m); capacity 25,000 worshippers |

📌 Peacock Throne (Takht-e-Taus): The most famous throne in Indian history, commissioned by Shah Jahan. Made of gold and encrusted with precious stones including the Koh-i-Noor diamond and the Timur Ruby. Originally placed in the Diwan-i-Khas of the Red Fort, Delhi. Taken by Nadir Shah of Persia when he invaded Delhi in 1739. The throne was later broken up; its gems were dispersed. The Koh-i-Noor eventually ended up in the British Crown Jewels.
