β Non-Aligned Movement (NAM): NAM was founded in 1961 at the Belgrade Conference. The five founding leaders were: Jawaharlal Nehru (India), Gamal Abdel Nasser (Egypt), Josip Broz Tito (Yugoslavia), Sukarno (Indonesia), and Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana). NAM was established during the Cold War to avoid alignment with either the USA-led Western bloc or the USSR-led Eastern bloc. India has been a strong advocate of NAM principles. The 19th NAM Summit was held in Uganda in 2024.
π BIMSTEC vs SAARC: India has been increasingly focusing on BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) as an alternative to SAARC, which has been stalled due to India-Pakistan tensions. BIMSTEC connects South Asia and Southeast Asia and does not include Pakistan. India hosted the 5th BIMSTEC Summit in 2022. BIMSTEC has 7 members: India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal, and Bhutan.
