White Revolution, Blue Revolution & Other Agricultural Revolutions

Operation Flood (Verghese Kurien), milk production, fisheries, horticulture โ€” all agricultural revolutions in India.

1. White Revolution โ€” Operation Flood

The White Revolution refers to the dramatic increase in milk production in India through Operation Flood (1970-1996). India became the world’s largest milk producer.

  • Father of White Revolution: Dr. Verghese Kurien โ€” “Milkman of India”
  • Operation Flood: Launched in 1970 by National Dairy Development Board (NDDB)
  • Amul model: Cooperative dairy model โ€” farmers own the cooperative, get fair prices
  • Three phases: Phase I (1970-81), Phase II (1981-85), Phase III (1985-96)
  • Result: India became world’s largest milk producer; milk production increased from 20 MT (1970) to 100+ MT today
โญ Amul Story: Amul (Anand Milk Union Limited) was founded in 1946 in Anand, Gujarat. Dr. Verghese Kurien transformed it into a model cooperative. The Amul model โ€” where farmers own the cooperative and get fair prices โ€” was replicated across India through Operation Flood. Today Amul is India’s largest food brand.
๐Ÿ’ก Why White Revolution Matters
Before Operation Flood, Indian farmers sold milk to private traders at low prices. Traders made huge profits while farmers remained poor.

Dr. Kurien’s idea: Let farmers form cooperatives, process milk themselves, and sell directly to consumers. Cut out the middleman.

Result: Farmers got better prices, consumers got quality milk, and India became the world’s largest milk producer. This is the power of cooperative economics!

2. Blue Revolution โ€” Fisheries

The Blue Revolution refers to the rapid development of India’s fisheries sector โ€” both marine and inland fisheries.

  • India is the 3rd largest fish producer in the world
  • India is the 2nd largest aquaculture producer globally
  • Fisheries contribute ~1% to GDP but employ ~28 million people
  • Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY): Launched 2020 to boost fisheries
  • Major fishing states: Kerala, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal
