Gharanas & Folk Music Traditions
The gharana system of Hindustani music, Carnatic traditions, and major folk music traditions of India โ Baul, Lavani, Bihu, Dandiya, and more.
๐๏ธ The Gharana System
- A gharana is a school of musical thought โ a lineage of teachers (ustads/pandits) and disciples sharing a distinct style, technique, and repertoire
- The word comes from “ghar” (house/family) โ originally, musical knowledge was passed within families
- Gharanas developed during the Mughal period when musicians received royal patronage and settled in specific cities
- Each gharana has a distinct approach to: voice production, ornamentation (gamak, meend, andolan), tempo, raga grammar, and improvisation
- The guru-shishya parampara (teacher-disciple tradition) is the foundation of the gharana system
